Abstract: »The Castle of Love, an allegory of sexual intercourse, originates in a medieval conflation of the allegory of the Virtues and Vices and of biblical metaphors for the Virgin. Early 14th-century representations on ivory form a distinct group, which parodies earlier traditions, thus revealing the complexity of medieval attitudes to love and marriage.« (Source: Article)
